Assam is one of the largest states in the northeast, located along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys south of the eastern Himalayas. It is bordered on the east by Nagaland and Manipur, on the south by Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Bangladesh, and on the west by West Bengal.

The state is renowned for its stunning natural scenery, abundant wildlife, and well-kept tea gardens. The blue mountains of Arunachal in the north and the highlands of Meghalaya and Nagaland in the south frame Assam’s picturesque landscape. Dispur is the capital of the country. Assamese is Assam’s official language. According to the 2011 census, Assam’s population is estimated to be around 3.12 million people. Assam is the 15th most populous state in the world.

The Karbi or Meghalaya plateau, the hills of the North Cachar and Barali range, and the plain of the Brahmaputra and Barak valley make up Assam’s physiography. The state’s forest cover is remarkable, accounting for 36.11 percent of its total land area. The year 2019 is upon us.

Rice, maize, pulses, potato, wheat, and other crops are grown in Assam. Tea, jute, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton, and tobacco are the major cash crops. The northern portion is occupied by the Brahmaputra River’s elongated gorge. This is Assam’s most populous area. As the Brahmaputra reaches Assam, it becomes a braided river (more than 16 km wide), with tributaries that create a huge flood plain. It’s known as Assam’s “Lifeline.”

Assam is known around the world for its biodiversity. It has many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, including the Manas and Kaziranga parks, both of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Indian one-horned rhinoceros can be found in Kaziranga National Park.

The epics Ramayana and Mahabharat contain references to ancient Assam, known as Pragjyotisha. The Ahom dynasty ruled the region for more than 600 years, maintaining Assam’s independence from Muslim invaders. Assam was first colonised by the British as a tea plantation, but it later became the epicentre of the Ahom dynasty’s downfall.
