Bhagavad Gita

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada wrote the holy book Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

The Bhagavad Gita is ancient India’s enduring message of spiritual enlightenment. The term Gita is a combination of the words song and word. Bhagavad signifies God, and the Bhagavad Gita is frequently referred to as the Song of God. The Bhagavad Gita is a blend of Hindu concepts of dharma, theistic bhakti, and yogic moksha ideals. The text incorporates ideas from the Samkhya-Yoga philosophy to address jnana, bhakti, karma, and Raja Yoga (discussed in the sixth chapter).

The Gita is told in the form of a conversation between Pandava prince Arjuna and his charioteer and mentor Krishna. Arjuna is burdened with moral dilemma and despair at the onset of the Dharma Yudhha (righteous war) between the Pandavas and the Kauravas because of the brutality and death that the war will bring in the battle against his own relatives. The Krishna–Arjuna debates contain a wide range of spiritual subjects, including ethical challenges and philosophical issues that extend well beyond Arjuna’s current conflict.

The Bhagavad Gita As It Is is a blend of Hindu concepts such as dharma, theistic bhakti, and yogic moksha aspirations. The text incorporates ideas from the Samkhya-Yoga philosophy to address jnana, bhakti, karma, and Raja Yoga (discussed in the sixth chapter). The Bhagavad Gita is the most well-known Hindu literature, with a distinct pan-Hindu influence.

The Mahabharata’s sixth book, The Gita, is one of India’s most famous epic poetry. It’s uncertain when the Gita was written—estimates vary widely—but many researchers believe it was finished around 200 CE and subsequently included into the larger book; many regard it as the first completely formed yogic scripture. The Gita, like all genuinely great works of literature, can be read on many levels: intellectual, moral, spiritual, and practical, which explains its appeal.

For those who haven’t read it, the Gita recounts a conversation between Arjuna, one of the Pandava princes, and Krishna, the Hindu god who serves as Arjuna’s charioteer in this epic. Arjuna and his brothers have been exiled from the kingdom of Kurukshetra for 13 years, and a faction of the family has cut them off from their rightful inheritance; the Gita picks up their fight to reclaim the throne, which requires Arjuna to wage war against his own kinsmen, bringing his considerable military skills to bear.

The storey begins on the dusty plains of Kurukshetra, where Arjuna, a renowned archer, is preparing for battle. But he hesitates. He sees arrayed against him friends, instructors, and kin, and believes that to fight—and presumably kill—these men would be to commit a great sin and could produce nothing good even if he were to win the kingdom back. Krishna chastises him for his cowardice—after all, Arjuna is a warrior, and warriors are supposed to fight—but then proceeds to present a spiritual rationale for fighting his foes, which includes a discussion of the karma, jnana, and bhakti yogas, as well as the nature of divinity, humanity’s ultimate destiny, and the purpose of mortal life.
