Everyday Use Alice Walker

One of Alice Walker’s first stories, “Everyday Use,” has been a mainstay of her writing ever since. She redefined art, women’s culture, and African American lives by using quilting as a metaphor for the artistic heritage that African Americans acquired from their maternal ancestors. By putting African American women’s voices at the center of the story for the first time, “Everyday Use” predicted the focus of a whole generation of black women writers.

This casebook has a biography of Walker, an official text of “Everyday Use” and “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens,” an interview with Walker, six critical pieces, and a list of Walker’s works. It also includes an introduction by the editor. The authors are Houston A. Baker, Jr., Thadious M. Davis, Margot Anne Kelley, John O’Brien, Elaine Showalter, and Mary Helen Washington. Charlotte Pierce-Baker is also a contributor.
