Foxe’s Book of Martyrs

The Actes and Monuments, also known as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, is a work of Protestant history and martyrology by Protestant English historian John Foxe. It was first published in 1563 by John Day. The full title of the work is Actes and Monuments of these Latter and Perilous Days, Touching Matters of the Church.

A polemical narrative of the persecution of Protestants by the Catholic Church is included, with a focus on England and Scotland in particular. The book had a significant impact on those societies and helped create enduring popular ideas about Catholicism there. Four editions of the book were published during Foxe’s lifetime, and there were numerous subsequent printings and abridgements of it, some of which reduced the material to a Book of Martyrs.
