The Indian Railways is the country’s primary source of freight and passenger transportation, and it plays a critical role in the growth of industry and agriculture.

For more than two centuries, the Indian Railways has proudly served the people of India. In 1851, the first train excursion in India was performed between Roorkee and Piran Kaliyar for the purpose of transporting enormous quantities of clay to Rorkee. On April 16, 1853, the first passenger train voyage between Bori Bunder, Bombay, and Thane, spanning a distance of 21 miles, became operational, officially launching India’s rail network.
The Indian railway network links the country’s social, cultural, and economic fabric, and it spans the country from north to south, east to west, reducing the distance between people. India’s railway network has brought the entire country together, fostering a sense of national togetherness among Indians.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has begun operating a train between Dibrugarh and Naharlagun, as part of India’s bid to take trains to the Himalayan heights and the Railway’s goal of providing connectivity to all state capitals in the north-eastern region. The state of Arunachal Pradesh now has much-needed train connectivity. According to media sources, Naharlagun, a town near the state capital Itanagar, has been included to India’s railway map. The Harmuti-Naharlagun line, which opened in April 2014, was envisaged in 1997 as part of a larger effort to increase Northeast connectivity.
