The Jan Aushadhi programme will make quality drugs more cheap by opening dedicated stores that sell generic medicines that are less expensive but have the same quality and efficacy as more expensive branded drugs.
- Increase public awareness of low-cost pharmaceuticals and how to get them.
- Through a public-private cooperation, make unbranded, high-quality generic pharmaceuticals available at reasonable prices.
- Encourage doctors to prescribe generic drugs, particularly in government hospitals.
- Allow for significant health-care cost savings, particularly for disadvantaged patients and those with chronic illnesses that necessitate long-term prescription use.
The Jan Aushadhi campaign began on November 25, 2008, with the introduction of the first Jan Aushadhi store at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, with the active participation of CPSUs such as IDPL, HAL, and BPC. The Jan Aushadhi initiative is now in its ambitious phase of launching more than 45 stores. Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, UP, Assam, and Chhattisgarh will open five Jan Aushadhi drug stores in Punjab in February 2009, one each in Bhatinda, Jalandhar, Panchkula, Faridabad, and Mohali. Additional stores in Panchkula and Faridabad will open soon.
While presenting the Budget for the year 2016-17 in Parliament, the Hon’ble Minister of Finance made a special reference to PMJAY. The following is an excerpt from the Hon’ble Finance Minister’s Budget Speech:
“A fundamental problem has been making high-quality medicines available at reasonable prices. The supply of generic medications will be re-energised. 3,000 stores will operate in 2017 as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jan Aushadhi Yojana.”
