Rip Van Winkle
The short novella known as “Rip Van Winkle” was written by the American author Washington Irving and released for the first time in the year 1819. Rip Van Winkle is the main character in this story. He is a Dutch-American villager who lives in colonial America.
He travels to the Catskill Mountains, where he meets some mystery Dutchmen, drinks their wine, and then falls asleep. He fell asleep throughout the American Revolution, so when he awoke 20 years later, he found himself in a drastically different world.
Irving wrote the story while he was visiting Birmingham, England, and was inspired to do so by a discussion on nostalgia that he had with his American brother-in-law, who was living abroad at the time. It was later published in a book called “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent,” which was a collection of his work.
Despite the fact that the narrative takes place in the Catskill Mountains of New York, close to where Irving eventually settled down, he admitted that at the time he penned the story, he had never even gone to the Catskills.
