Independence Day is a national holiday in India that commemorates the country’s independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, the date on which the provisions of the 1947 Indian Independence Act, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, became effective. India remained King George VI as its head of state until it became a true republic on January 26, 1950 (Indian Republic Day), when the nation ratified the Constitution of India, which replaced the dominion prefix, Dominion of India, with the enactment of the sovereign law Constitution of India. The Independence Movement, which was characterised by nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience, led to India’s independence.
The partition of India, in which British India was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan, occurred at the same time as independence; the partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties, as well as the displacement of nearly 15 million people due to religious violence. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi on August 15, 1947. The incumbent Prime Minister raises the flag and delivers an address to the country on each following Independence Day. Doordarshan, India’s national broadcaster, broadcasts the full ceremony, which generally opens with Ustad Bismillah Khan’s shehnai music.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural activities are held across India on Independence Day. It is a public holiday in the United States.
